What happens in lessons

At the beginning of lessons we suggest activities that are routine, such as walking or sitting. For part of the lesson, you lie on a table or floor, so that you can experience the principles in action without the demand of having to perform any activity. Lying down with knees up is encouraged as a way to to consciously work on yourself during your normal day.

A basic activity such as standing, sitting or walking is used in order to identify and stop habitual interference with natural coordination, usually by allowing time for observation and thinking. In this way a capacity to respond freely, not habitually, can reassert itself. The teacher shows how the head, neck and back together can lengthen and so increase capacity for freedom of movement. The teacher will use their hands to provide feedback to help you perceive exactly when your habit is interfering - often during the mental preparation of movement.

Later, once the fundamenal processes are established, the teacher and pupil together craft activities designed to test and avoid habitual interference. Some of these may be suggested by F. M. Alexander's historic examples, but many may be invented on the spot.

As new observations and experiences are continually made you will find that your choice of movement behaviour enlarged.
